In Portugal you will find good surf all year round, but in February / March are the best waves. You don't need not go very far to find beautiful beaches. However, you do need a car to get around. Vimeiro's coast and Santa Cruz are considered among the best in Europe. Courses are available for those who want to try your hand at surfing, or learn more.

Vimeiro

If you go to Portugal for surfing take the opportunity to go to Vimeiro. The coast here is ranked as Europe's best surfing. In Santa Cruz you will find both courses and equipment rental. Santa Cruz, Porto Novo and Santa Rita is ranked as the second best beaches. The beach that is also used for major international surfing competitions is in Ericeira, called Ribeira das Ilhas about 20 km north of Vimeiro.

Oeiras, Carcavelos & Cascais

Carcavelos located 20 minutes outside Lisbon is the surfers most central beach and there are always surfers here even on days without a single wave. From the apartment in Oeiras, you can walk there. It takes about 20 minutes, or take the train to a station.

For windsurfing visit the beautiful beach of Guincho between Cascais and Sintra.

Algarve

Algarve coast is unique because it has two different coastlines both south and west, and when there are no waves in one of them, it's probably good on the other one and it does not take long to drive between them. But the West Coast is a safer alternative and winter months tend to offer the finest waves. The farther to the east you go, the smaller waves and more people along its banks.

Tips!

Some airlines charge extra fee of 200 euro for the surfboard so ask about this before you leave, maybe it's worth to hire on the spot instead.

Use sunscreen even if it does not feel particularly warm in the air as even cloudy sky burns the skin anyway.
